Avon followed the woman, Dr. Mkampa, to a low building some ways away from the main compound. Part of her wondered what the Nihil would do to the rest of her group. It didn’t seem like they wanted to hurt any of them. If they had they could’ve easily gotten rid of them on board the Poisoned Barb. But it seemed strange to think they’d been recruited somehow. Why would the Nihil have to recruit kids? They were the scariest thing on the frontier. They took whatever they wanted, and even the Republic had reason to fear them. They were powerful in a way not too many were. It seemed like people, at least a certain sort, should be lining up to join them.

Avon’s attention was pulled away from her musings and to the door opening before her. Dr. Mkampa gestured for her to enter.

“I don’t think I have to tell you that any attempt at escape will be met with a swift and painful punishment,” the woman said. “It’s primitive, but the Nihil are somewhat known for their simplicity. It’s one of the things I appreciate about them.”

Avon said nothing, just took in the room around her. It was a lab of sorts. There was a crystal matrix analyzer and a number of oscilloscopes, as well as a Mertigan, which was used to measure compounded energy output from crystals. None of the machines looked new, and a few showed signs of having been repaired. It should have been exciting, to find a scientist who needed Avon’s help after the harrowing experience of being kidnapped, but all Avon could think about was the people who had once owned this equipment.

What had happened to them? Were they still alive?

Maybe it was better not to think about such things.

Dr. Mkampa pointed to a pile of dust sitting in a jar. “You and I have a very, very big job before us. I need to ascertain the correct frequency to create a chain reaction of vibrations in that ferrous crystal aggregate.”

“Wouldn’t that just be the crystals’ base unit extrapolated to Layne’s coefficient?” Avon said, peering at the dust on the plate of the Mertigan.

“Where did they find you again?” Dr. Mkampa said, her dark brows arched and her arms crossed. Avon suddenly wondered if she’d revealed too much, and she coughed delicately.

“I don’t suppose I could have a glass of water? I’m afraid I’m pretty thirsty.”

“Of course. Follow me, and I’ll show you the rest of the lab while we get it.”

There wasn’t much to the lab beyond what Dr. Mkampa had already shown Avon. There was a crystal splicer and an actual fusion matrix, which was used to create synthetic crystals that could focus and channel power. Such a machine was rare, and Avon had begged Professor Glenna Kip more times than she could remember to go see the fusion matrix kept on Coruscant. Professor Kip had joked about not being welcome on Coruscant, and the matter had been put to bed. But looking at the machine now, Avon wondered once again who had owned it.
